Body Fat Estimator (Navy Method) illustration

Body Fat Estimator (Navy Method)

Estimates body fat percentage from circumference measurements (neck, waist, and hip for women) using the US Navy formula — no calipers or scales needed beyond a tape measure.

Measure just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly down at the front.
Men: at the navel. Women: at the narrowest point.
At the widest point.

Notes

  • The Navy formula is accurate to roughly ±3–4 % compared with DEXA scans — good for tracking change, less good as an absolute number.
  • Measure at the same time of day, tape snug but not compressing the skin.
  • This is an educational estimate, not medical advice; consult a professional for decisions about your health.
