Printable Sundial Generator

Enter your latitude, pick a horizontal (tabletop) or vertical south-facing dial, choose the range of hours to mark, and get a printable dial face with the hour lines placed correctly for your location. The hour lines are not evenly spaced: for a horizontal dial each line follows tan(θ) = sin(latitude)·tan(15°×h) from solar noon, and a vertical dial uses cos(latitude) instead, so the spacing is only right at the latitude you build it for. The generator also draws a gnomon (style) fold template whose edge angle equals your latitude (horizontal) or its complement (vertical), and marks the noon line so you can align it to true north. A sundial reads solar time, which drifts from clock time by up to about sixteen minutes across the year (the equation of time) plus a fixed longitude offset and any daylight saving — an optional longitude correction nudges the hour lines to match. Notes

  • The hour-line spacing is only correct at the latitude you enter — a dial made for 40° will read wrong at 50°; rebuild it for each location.
  • The gnomon (the shadow-casting edge) must tilt up at an angle equal to your latitude for a horizontal dial (its complement, 90°−latitude, for a vertical one) and point at the celestial pole — true north in the northern hemisphere.
  • A sundial shows apparent solar time, not clock time: expect it to differ from your watch by the equation of time (±~16 min over the year), your longitude offset within the time zone, and daylight saving.
