Heat & Altitude Pace Adjuster

Estimates how much to slow your goal pace when racing in heat or at altitude, using two field-tested rules of thumb: roughly +0.35% per °C above 15 °C, and about +6% per 1000 m of elevation above 300 m for runners without acclimatization.

Notes

  • Humidity, sun exposure and acclimatization move the heat penalty a lot; dew point above 18 °C hurts more than the thermometer suggests.
  • Two to three weeks at altitude removes much of the altitude penalty for races longer than a few minutes.
  • Educational estimate for sport and training purposes, not professional coaching or medical advice.
